Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch, Bowman
The Brooks family hosted the lunch stop on Saturday. Steve and Ryan Brooks and their families manage this third-generation ranch northwest of Bowman.

Six guest Angus breeders from southwest North Dakota had Angus and horses on display at the midday stop on Saturday.

Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch is home to 500 Angus cows on 11,000 acres.
The third generation of the Brooks family now own and operate Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch, located northwest of Bowman. The ranch was established in 1935 by Harold Brooks, the grandfather of Steve and Ryan, who own and manage the operation today, along with their families.
The registered Angus herd, which includes 500 cows on 11,000 acres, started as a commercial Angus operation in 1941. The switch to raising registered seedstock was made in the 1970s. Production goals are to raise cattle that excel in calving ease while still being in the top one-third of the Angus breed for weaning and yearling growth and carcass traits. The ranch has been carcass testing and collecting data for more than 20 years.

Most of the feed for the herd is produced on the ranch, and all calves are backgrounded. The ranch was recognized as one of the top 10 herds in the first Best of the Breed Carcass Challenge.

Family members are active in both national and state Angus and beef industry organizations. Steve currently serves as president of the American Angus Association.
