The national park encompasses approximately 1,800 acres and includes the McLean home, where the Civil War came to an end April 9, 1865, after approximately 630,000 deaths and more than 1 million casualties. General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at the home of Wilmer and Virginia McLean in the village of Appomattox Court House, the former county seat for Appomattox County. The historic area includes 27 original 19th-century structures and old country lanes, where the commanding generals once stood amongst the rolling hills of rural central Virginia.
