Sugar Loaf Farms, Staunton
Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, Sugar Loaf Farms is named for a cone-shaped mountain on the farm. Owner J. Gray Ferguson bought his first Angus cows in 1989, and Jeff Kaufman has been managing the herd ever since.
Sugar Loaf currently runs 200 registered cows and 200 commercial cows. They utilize rotational grazing and gather ultrasound data with the goal to produce sound, practical cattle that can work on the Virginia fescue.
Sugar Loaf sends all their feeder calves to Pennsylvania. They market their cattle using a variety of methods, including production sales, feeder calf sales and private treaty. They also send bulls to Montana to participate in the Midland Bull Test, something that has proven successful for the operation.
Sugar Loaf Farms makes breeding decisions that result in cattle that fit their customers needs. They will also host other producers cattle displays at the early morning stop.

In an effort to maintain their individuality in the seedstock business, Sugar Loaf uses unique genetics in a practical manner, producing cattle that will work for their customers.
The Virginia Angus Association has honored Sugar Loaf with the Seedstock Producer of the Year award. Jeff has also been named the associations Manager of the Year.
