Martin Angus Ranch, Winters

In addition to Angus cattle, Tony and Dorothy Martin produce a variety of specialty crops and foods at Martin Angus Ranch.

In 1953, Tony Martin started a diversified farming operation, growing tomatoes, wheat, alfalfa, walnuts and plums. In 1968, he returned to the cattle business, buying commercial cows. He purchased 10 registered Angus cows in 1973. Since then, he and his wife, Dorothy, have expanded the herd to 500 registered and commercial Angus cows, selling 100 range bulls and 100 females each year.

Six employees work daily on the ranch that includes nearly 3,000 acres of irrigated pasture, hay, walnuts, plums and hill range ground. Martin has relied on accurate recordkeeping, the use of EPDs and ET to improve his herd.

He is a member of the California Cattlemen’s Association, California Angus Association and the California Farm Bureau. In the past, he has served on the board of directors for several cooperatives, including Sunsweet Dryers. He also was a founder of the California Apricot Producers Association.

Regional manager John Dickinson served as emcee of the two-day event.
