Vintage Angus Ranch, La Grange

Genetics from Vintage Angus Ranch can be found in herds across the country.

When Jim Coleman founded the Vintage Angus Ranch herd, his goal was to select females and sires from the best Angus herds in the country to establish what is now a diverse set of genetics and a core of superior-producing cow families. Since then, he has assembled one of the country’s best sets of donor cows and an extensive ET program that allows Vintage genetics to influence herds across the country. In 1989, Coleman hired Doug Worthington to manage the herd of 450 Angus cows that live on more than 5,000 acres in the Sierra foothills near La Grange.

Cattle are the only enterprise on the ranch, which relies on performance data to control mature cow size, improve weaning and yearling weights and maintain the calving ease and maternal traits that commercial producers want from the Angus breed. The ranch also has a keen focus on carcass traits. Ultrasound is used on every bull and female to monitor genetic progress for customers and consumers. The ranch hosts two sales each fall, the “Carcass Maker Bull Sale” and a production sale featuring 75 females.

More than 200 Angus enthusiasts from the United States, Canada and Poland attended the 2002 National Angus Conference and Tour
