Frey Angus Ranch, Granville
After a 2-1/2-hour bus ride from Mandan to Granville, guests arrived at Frey Angus Ranch and were greeted by Lynn Frey. The Frey family had cattle on display that will be part of their mature cow dispersal due to his father retiring after 80 years in the business.

Many guest producers brought cattle to display at Frey Angus Ranch.

Breeders offered a variety of different marketing products to attract tour guests to their displays. Snacks, calling cards and mugs were all products that were distributed.

Established in 1950, Frey Angus Ranch today includes 650 cows and 5,000 acres managed by the Frey family.
Allen Frey established Frey Angus Ranch in the 1950s with the purchase of just a few registered Angus cows. Today, the operation includes 650 cows and 5,000 acres managed solely by the Frey family.

Involved in the operation are Allen and Arlyss Frey, their sons — Lynn, Arlen, Vern and Edward — and their families. A daughter, Merry Green, also helps with the annual production sale (conducted the third Saturday in February) and other events at the ranch.

The Freys raise all of their own feed — including corn, oats, barley and alfalfa — on the ranch.
The Freys raise all of their own feed — including corn, oats, barley and alfalfa — on the ranch. Their philosophy on genetics has been to maintain cattle that will perform well and have good carcass qualities while maintaining strong maternal traits and eye appeal. The use of expected progeny differences and ultrasound data, as well as other tools provided by the American Angus Association, are critical to their business.

Family members are involved in national and state Angus and beef industry organizations and have held many leadership positions. Vern currently serves as secretary of the North Dakota Angus Association.
